History enthusiasts will find the rich history of Northeast Oregon on display throughout Baker County at a variety of local museums and historic sites including the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, (closed through 2023 for major renovations), the Sumpter Valley Railroad, Baker City's award winning historic downtown district. There are also, more than a half dozen local museums showcasing our local history and heritage from the early pioneers and settlement of the region to the gold rush, railroad, and timber eras that shaped the region over the last century and a half.
